What Is Hearing Loss?

Hearing loss can make it difficult to hear or comprehend the sounds. This occurs when there’s an issue in one of the parts that comprise the ear or the nerves that come out of the ears or the hearing portion of the brain.

A few people have hearing loss from birth. However, hearing loss can be gradual in its development or develop later in the course. Hearing loss can be found in some families or could be the result of a birth defect, infection, or drugs that cause damage to the ear. It is impossible to prevent these types of problems with hearing.

However, you can take action to prevent the loss of hearing due to noise. A sudden, loud sound (like the sound of an explosion) or exposure to continuous loud sounds can cause damage to the tiny hair cells in the ear’s inner part, rendering it difficult to hear. If the sound around you can be so intense that it requires you to shout in order to be heard, or you are unable to hear people in the vicinity, there’s an opportunity that you’ll have difficulty hearing.

What’s Tinnitus?

Have you experienced a ringing or buzzing noise in your ears after attending a concert, party, or any other noisy occasion? It’s called Tinnitus (pronounced as TIN-ih-tus). It typically improves over one or two days. However, a tinnitus-like or muffled sensation in your ears could be an indication of something wrong with the cells of hair within your ear. Hair cells absorb sounds and transform them into electrical signals, which are transmitted to the brain. If the hair cells are damaged, they are unable to transmit sound signals as effectively as they used to do before.

Hearing loss and Tinnitus cannot disappear even if you listen to high-pitched music or hear the same loud sound over and over repeatedly. That’s why construction and airport workers wear ear protectors. Lawnmowers as well as power tools, like chainsaws, are noisy enough to cause Tinnitus as well as hearing loss.

Being exposed to loud music often can lead to issues over time, particularly when you are using headphones and earbuds. Some musicians have lost hearing and suffer from tinnitus issue that is very serious for those who need to hear in order to compose music. This is why you’ll see more musicians wearing earplugs when they’re playing.

How Can I Prevent Noise-Induced Hearing Loss?

The most effective way to avoid hearing loss caused by noise is to shield your hearing from loud sounds:

  • Stay away from loud music or loudspeakers.
  • Lower the volume while playing music or watching television. If you are wearing earphones as well as earbuds, they should be capable of hearing conversations within your vicinity.
  • Pause after listening to music on headphones or earbuds for longer than an hour at one duration.
  • Use earplugs during concerts or when you are in a group.
  • Use earplugs or muffles when you are mowing the lawn or using power tools or whenever you’re near noisy machinery.
  • Discuss with your doctor the possibility of having a hearing test if you suffer from Tinnitus that doesn’t go away or if you’re worried about your hearing.
